Glenmont Metro Station's Usage
Exceeds Forecasted Projections
Usage of the Glenmont Metro Station, which opened just over six months ago, has already climbed to approximately 7,900 riders per day, according to the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority. This patronage is 13 percent higher than the 7,000 riders that Metro projected would be using the station one full year after opening.
"The success of this station is a testament to the long-range planning by Metro and the supportive efforts of the County and State to assure a smooth and trouble-free opening of the station," said Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan. "Montgomery County residents waited 30 years for completion of the entire Red Line, from Shady Grove to Glenmont. It is now evident that the wait was well worth it, and that the persistence of prior leaders to assure funding for completion of the Glenmont segment of the line was the right thing to do," Duncan added.
"The popularity of the Glenmont Station shows the important role that transit plays in reducing congestion and enhancing the quality of life for citizens of the region," said WMATA General Manager Richard A. White. "As the region continues to grow, transit will become even more critical as part of the region's transportation network."
Located on Georgia Avenue at Glenallan Road, just north of Randolph Road and west of Layhill Road, the Glenmont Station was under construction for seven years. Its 1,800-space garage fills most weekdays by mid-morning. The station is also served by 17 bus routes, with both Ride On and Metrobus service, and has "Kiss-and-Ride" access from both sides of Georgia Avenue.
When the station first opened last July, average weekday ridership was 6,800 per day. Officials estimate that about 4,000 of the Glenmont riders formerly boarded Metro at Wheaton station; the remaining 3,900 are new Metrorail customers.
