Hazardous Waste Collection
Comes to East County
Saturday, March 20

Montgomery County's mobile household hazardous waste collection program is coming to the eastern county on Saturday, March 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The collection will be held at the Briggs Chaney Park and Ride lot, at the intersection of Briggs Chaney Road and Gateshead Manor Road.

Sponsored by the County's Division of Solid Waste Services, the program allows residents to safely dispose of toxic, flammable and corrosive materials they have stored in their homes.

Materials which are accepted for collection include pesticides, herbicides, oil-based paints, paint thinners, solvents, used motor oils, antifreeze and unwanted fuels. Additional items accepted include fluorescent light bulbs, swimming pool chemicals, photographic chemicals, brake fluid, car batteries, button batteries and household alkaline batteries.

Hazardous materials which are not accepted include commercial, industrial or medical wastes, radioactive materials, asbestos, and propane tanks or cylinders.

All materials collected will be transported to and processed at a federally-approved hazardous materials recycling or disposal facility.

Residents are encouraged to reduce the amount of hazardous waste they generate by substituting non-toxic or less toxic products. They are also urged to purchase only the amount of a product that they will be able to use or store safely, and to share excess materials with friends and neighbors.

For more information or to receive a free brochure with a collection schedule and tips on proper handling and disposal of household hazardous waste materials, call the County's Division of Solid Waste Services at 301-217-2770.
