Duncan Joins State, City Leaders in
Announcing Community Development
Initiatives for Takoma Park

Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan today joined Delegate Peter Franchot and Takoma Park Mayor Kathy Porter in announcing a series of jointly funded community and economic development initiatives for the City of Takoma Park.

Duncan has earmarked $600,000 in County funds as a contribution toward a matching $800,000 appropriation authorized by the State legislature last year. The balance of the match will come from Community Development Block Grant funds received by the County from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and passed through to the City to fund eligible projects. Included among the projects are streetscape improvements for Takoma Junction, Takoma Old Town and Lee Avenue.

"This is one more example of a successful partnership between the City of Takoma Park, the County and the State, to improve the quality of public facilities and services and expand economic opportunities for local residents," said Duncan.

Through its Renew Montgomery program, the County is also providing an additional $1.9 million for infrastructure improvements. The County funds will help to strengthen both commercial and residential areas that were annexed into the City from Prince George's County in 1997, when Takoma Park was unified in Montgomery County. The infrastructure improvements will include work in the Pinecrest neighborhood and in commercial areas along New Hampshire Avenue, between East-West Highway and Eastern Avenue.

"I want to compliment Kathy Porter and Doug Duncan on an extraordinary partnership between Montgomery County and Takoma Park. These grants from Montgomery County will improve the quality of life in Takoma Park," said Franchot.

"We, in Takoma Park, are very excited about this community/economic development initiative and are very pleased the County Executive has budgeted these funds," said Mayor Porter.
