DUNCAN APPROVES PLAN TO BEEF UP
SECURITY AT PARKING FACILITIES For Immediate Release: Dec. 27, 1995
In an effort to improve security around Montgomery County parking garages and lots, County Executive Douglas M. Duncan has approved a plan to increase police patrols and other security staff near facilities in Bethesda, Silver Spring and Wheaton. The plan went into effect this month in all three commercial business districts.
"I have been concerned that the County has not been doing enough to create a secure environment in our central business districts," said Duncan. "By stepping up the number of police patrols around our parking facilities, we provide a more credible deterrent to crime and a more rapid response to criminal incidents."
Duncan had originally proposed the increased police patrols and security enhancements in his recommended operating budget, last March. In the approved budget, the County Council, however, rejected the approach and -- instead of authorizing the cost of police overtime -- transferred the funding to an increased use of contracted security guards.
But earlier this month, the Executive presented to the Council a revised plan which would provide for the added police patrols and an expanded use of the Silver Spring Service Corps for parking facility security, without increasing the Council's approved level of funding.
