DUNCAN RECOMMENDS PURVIS
TO HEAD ANIMAL CONTROL
AND HUMANE TREATMENT For Immediate Release: March 4, 1996
Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan today appointed Brenda S.
Purvis to the post of Director of the Division of Animal Control and Humane
Treatment.
Purvis, 37, has served for the past three years as the Animal Control
Administrator for Howard County. Her responsibilities in that position
included overall management of animal control activities, including rabies
control and licensing. Prior to that, she served as the shelter director for
the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria and as an animal control officer with
the City of Hyattsville.
"Brenda Purvis brings a very important set of qualifications to this
position," said Duncan. "Her wealth of experience and extensive background in
this field will greatly benefit our animal control and humane services."
Under a reorganization plan put forward by Duncan and approved by the
County Council, animal control and humane treatment responsibilities now fall
under the jurisdiction of the Police Department. The newly created division
of Animal Control and Humane Treatment will be responsible for the care and
placement of animals for adoption, rabies vaccinations, licensing, overseeing
compliance with animal control laws. The Director will also administer a
contract with the Humane Society for the operation of the animal shelter.
Purvis' appointment is subject to confirmation by the County Council.
