COUNTY PLANS FOR THE
AFTERMATH OF THE
BLIZZARD OF '96 For Immediate Release: January 12, 1996
Now that the snow has stopped falling, Montgomery County
officials are offering the following information concerning snow
removal operations and other services to help citizens recover
from the recent storms.
Residential street plowing will continue throughout the
weekend and into the beginning of next week. Residents are
reminded that unplowed residential streets should be reported to
the snow plow hotline at 301-217-2159.
Recycling and County-provided trash pickup services will
resume on Monday, January 15. Residents are asked to place all
items at curbside on their regular scheduled dates. Yard trim and
Christmas trees should not be included in order to allow
contractors to catch up on trash and recyclables that could not
be picked up during the snow storms. Pickups of yard trim and
Christmas trees will resume the week of January 22.
Because fire hydrants are obscured by snow, residents are
asked to shovel snow away from hydrants until they are visible.
Fire and rescue officials are concerned about tunnels and
enclosed forts that children have built out of snow. According
to members of the Montgomery County Collapse Rescue Team, snow

forts pose a danger to children who may suffocate if the
structure collapses. Warmer temperatures are expected, which
increases the risk of collapse. Several incidents have already
been reported in other areas, and they have resulted in serious
injury and death. In addition, snowplow crews working in
residential neighborhoods may not be aware that children are
playing in the mounds of snow.
Volunteers are sought for a variety of cleanup efforts.
Programs include the Four-Wheel Drive Program, where volunteers
transport medical personnel and patients to and from hospitals.
For more information, call 217-4645 or 217-2470.
The Neighbors Helping Neighbors Snow Help Line matches able-
bodied individuals with senior citizens and people with
disabilities who need help digging out from the snow or picking
up critical "phoned-in" prescriptions. Call 217-4949.
County school officials are expecting that normal school
hours will resume on Tuesday, January 16. Residents are asked
to clear sidewalks and bus stop areas in their neighborhoods so
that children can get to school safely. Parents are asked to
make sure that their children wear bright or dark colored
clothing to school so that they are more visible to drivers.
Motorists are reminded to watch out for students and other
pedestrians. County officials anticipate that it will be several
days before all sidewalks are clear of snow and ice.
