STORM COSTS NOW PROJECTED
AT $13 MILLION For Immediate Release: January 19, 1996
Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan announced today that the
projected snow removal costs for the Blizzard of 1996 will exceed $13 million.
This figure includes snow costs for the County government, public schools and
local municipalities from January 6 through 19. Earlier projections had
included only the time period January 6 through 10.
"Clearly, this storm was of historic proportions, as were the costs,"
said Duncan. "I am hopeful that the federal government will help us recover
the local funding used to fight the Blizzard of 1996."
In a January 18 letter to Governor Glendenning requesting federal
assistance for reimbursement of costs, Duncan asked that the federal emergency
declaration include the entire period (Jan. 6 -19) for funding consideration.
President Clinton had declared Montgomery County as one of the jurisdictions
in Maryland eligible to receive recovery assistance for costs of the blizzard
from January 6 through 10.
To date, County officials estimate that snow removal for County
government alone in 1996 will cost more than $9 million. This figure exceeds
the total amount spent for snow operations for the past three years (1993-
1995) combined, which averaged $2.9 million per year.
