 WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH PROGRAMS
 SCHEDULED BY COMMISSION FOR WOMEN   For Immediate Release: March 1, 1996
 
 
     In observance of Women's History Month, the Commission for Women's
 Counseling and Career Center has scheduled three programs addressing various
 themes.
      March 7 - Women Around the World Coming to America-- a seminar on the
 contributions and concerns of immigrant and refugee women in Montgomery
 County.  The discussion will focus on the unique cultures and customs of
 immigrant and refugee women and the ways they have adapted to their new homes
 in the U.S.
      Panelists will include Lomi Tschay, Belay and Kieu-Nga Nguyen Dang of
 the refugee Women's Domestic Violence Project; Ana Sol Gutierrez, president of
 the Montgomery County Board of Education; Blanca King, president of the
 Montgomery County Hispanic Employees Association; and Daphne Kwok, executive
 director of the Organization of Chinese Americans.
      March 14 - Mama Strong: African American Mothers in History -- a program
 exploring the roles of African American mothers in shaping American history.
 The discussion will cover those who made history while raising children and
 those less well-known who raised history-making children.
      The workshop will be lead by Vikki Montgomery Fields, founder of the
 Mama Kenda Network, a support system for African American mothers, and

 publisher of Mama O: The Journal for African American Mothers of Faith.
      March 28 - Riding Astride: The Frontier in Women's History -- this new
 book by Patricia Riley Dunlap recognizes the accomplishments and characters of
 frontier women who branded cattle, mined for gold and silver, farmed,
 performed in rodeos and worked as doctors, lawyers and journalists.   The
 author will discuss the roles these women played in initiating the struggle
 for women's rights in the United States.
      The programs will be held at the Commission for Women's Counseling and
 Career Center, 255 N. Washington Street, Rockville, from 7 to 8:45 p.m.  The
 fee is $10 per program and registration is required.
