COUNTY'S LEAF VACUUMING
PROGRAM NEARS COMPLETION		For Immediate Release:  
 					     December 18, 1995



	Although an early winter has slowed curbside leaf vacuuming 
efforts in lower Montgomery County, the County's Division of 
Public Works reports that its annual collection program should be 
fully completed by mid-January.  Crews have conducted a first 
round of vacuuming throughout the service area and are nearing 
completion of their second and final round of collections.

	 The collection schedule has been delayed due to a variety 
of weather-related factors, including:

	*	Several days of freezing rain, snow and ice -- 
conditions which often require that the same trucks 
used for leaf vacuuming be re-tooled for plowing and abrasive-spreading 
operations;

	*	Severe cold, which reduces the vacuuming equipment's 
effectiveness; and

	*	High winds, which require crews to conduct storm damage 
clean-up efforts, rather than leaf pick-ups.
