MONTGOMERY COUNTY OFFICIALS
CELEBRATE RECONSTRUCTION OF
LINDEN LANE BRIDGE For Immediate Release: May 16, 1996

Montgomery County officials joined State and federal representatives
today in celebrating the reconstruction of the bridge on Linden Lane over the
CSX rail line in Silver Spring's Forest Glen area. County Chief
Administrative Officer Bruce Romer, County Council members and Department of
Public Works and Transportation Director Graham Norton, were among those in
attendance.
"It is very gratifying to be celebrating the reopening of what now we
can be assured is a bridge that is safe and able to accommodate all sized
vehicles," said Romer, speaking on behalf of County Executive Douglas M.
Duncan.
The new 58-foot, two-lane bridge replaces an older deficient timber
bridge that was originally constructed in 1942. The bridge provides two
lanes of traffic 12 feet wide each, and a two-foot shoulder and five-foot
sidewalk on each side.
Eighty percent of the construction costs for the $1.8 million bridge
replacement will be reimbursed to the County by the Federal government and
CSXT railroad. The project was coordinated by the County's Department of
Public Works and Transportation with the Maryland State Highway
Administration, CSXT Railroad (previous owner of the bridge), and Walter Reed
Army Medical Center.

The old bridge -- which had a posted weight limit of three tons -- was
closed in November 1994, following concern over the bridge's safety. The
bridge was featured on a 1993 "Dateline NBC" segment highlighting "The Most
Dangerous Bridges in the Country."
Corman Construction, Inc. was the construction contractor.
