COUNTY TO SCHEDULE SPECIAL
LEAF COLLECTION IN LOWER COUNTY For Immediate Release: February 9, 1996

The Montgomery County Division of Public Works has announced a one-time
leaf collection to begin in mid-March in the designated leaf vacuuming areas
of the lower county. Yellow signs announcing the collection will be posted
along the streets by late February. Officials expect to complete the
collection within three to four weeks. Residents can also anticipate a
Countywide sweeping in the spring to remove the abrasives spread for de-icing
and other winter street debris.
"Due to the extraordinary weather conditions in the fall and early
winter, we were unable to complete our annual collections, which are normally
finished by mid-December, " said John Thompson, Division of Public Works
chief.
"The spring leaf collection is a one-time only pick-up," Thompson said,
"and the division will dedicate all available resources to the effort to get
rid of all the leaves."
The leaf vacuuming district is bounded by I-270, Norbeck, Bel Pre and
Bonifant roads, Northwest Branch Park, and the District of Columbia and Prince
George's County lines.
Residents with leaf-related questions/problems may call 217-2159, during
normal working hours. All reports will be investigated by Public Works
