Maritime Commission Bars
Island Shipping From
Providing Services For Immediate Release:March 15,1996

A local business, Island Shipping, has been barred by the
Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) from providing international
shipping services until it complies with FMC regulations.
Montgomery County's Office of Consumer Affairs (OCA) is warning
consumers not to contract with Island Shipping without first
contacting either OCA or FMC to confirm that this company has
filed a tariff and a bond needed to protect the public from loss
or damage. OCA has received numerous complaints about Island
Shipping where consumers allege they paid for shipping services
to the Carribean Islands but their goods never arrived. Some
consumers lost both their possessions and the money they paid
Island Shipping. Other consumers received their goods but had to
pay additional costs to third party shipping companies in order
to recover their possessions.
"We want to make sure that other consumers are not harmed by
Island Shipping, and we are assisting the Federal Maritime
Commission and other enforcement agencies in prosecuting this
company." stated Barbara Gregg, OCA Executive Director.
The Federal Maritime Commission found that Island Shipping
and its president, Michael Grant, violated the Shipping Act of
1984 by acting as a "non-vessel-operating common carrier" in
twenty-two specified instances, without filing a tariff and bond
required by federal law. Anyone who has a complaint involving
this company should contact either OCA at 301-217-7373 of FMC
Bureau of Enforcement at 202-523-5783.
