COUNTY OFFERS MINI GRANTS
FOR INNOVATIVE PREVENTION
PROGRAMS For Immediate Release: February 20, 1996

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services is now
accepting applications from community organizations for mini-grants to help
fund innovative alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention programs. The
department is especially interested in programs that address high risk groups
and neighborhoods, as well as programs that prevent both violence and drug
use.
Grants -- of up to $5,000 each -- are available for projects that will
be conducted between July 1, 1996 and June 30, 1997. Some examples of current
mini-grant projects include: programs for youth that develop positive social
and coping skills through arts, sports and social events; medication
management education programs for senior citizens; and parenting education
programs.
Applications can be obtained by calling the Department of Health and
Human Services' Substance Abuse Prevention Services at 217-1311.
The deadline for submitting applications is March 14.
Applicants are encouraged to attend one of two informational meetings on
February 28 at 7:30 p.m. and February 29 at 1:30 p.m. Both meetings will be
held in the first floor conference room at 401 Fleet Street, Rockville.
For more information, call Nancy Lynott at 217-1110.
