FREE MULCH AVAILABLE
AT NEIGHBORHOOD SITES For Immediate Release: April 29, 1996

Free mulch is available for residents and commercial landscapers at any
one of 10 sites around the County.
The County's Division of Solid Waste Services reminds the public that
the mulch distributed at the sites is freshly ground and not the same as
mulch sold at garden centers and nurseries. Because it has not been aged, the
mulch is good for woody plants such as shrubs, trees and bushes that have
established, deep root systems. The fresh mulch also provides good ground
cover and is useful for controlling vegetation. The mulch can also be used
for composting. Do not use it in delicate flower beds or on other plants with
shallow root systems.
Persons handling the fresh mulch should wear gloves and long-sleeved
shirts, long pants and a dust mask to prevent allergic reactions.
Since the Neighborhood Mulch Preserve program began in 1994, more than
20,000 tons of mulch that would have composted at the Dickerson Compost
Facility have been diverted to the local sites for pickup.
Mulch may be picked up at the following locations:
          Bethesda
          Cabin John Regional Park
          7801 Democracy Blvd.
