RAIN MAY ADD
WEIGHT TO ALREADY
STRESSED ROOFS For Immediate Release: January 18, 1996
As a result of the recent storms, many roofs in the area
still hold large amounts of snow. While warmer temperatures have
started to slowly melt some of the snow, forecasted rain could
add sufficient weight to snow-laden roofs to result in structural
failure.
As a precautionary measure, Montgomery County officials are
urging that buildings with flat roof drains and scuppers should
be cleared of snow, ice and other blockages to allow for
sufficient drainage.
Questions about the weight capacity of a roof should be
referred to a qualified structural engineer. Homeowners are
urged to stay off the roofs of their homes and obtain a licensed
or bonded contractor to remove snow and ice from around gutters.
For more information on roofs and flooding, County residents
can call the Residents Storm Relief Help Line 217-2470.
