COUNTY STREET-SWEEPING
PROGRAM GETS UNDERWAY For Immediate Release: April 1, 1996
Beginning today, Montgomery County's roadways will be getting a spring
cleaning. With Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan and County
Council member Derick Berlage on hand to launch the effort in Germantown, the
County's Department of Public Works and Transportation kicked off a 10-12 week
street-sweeping program which is slated to cover approximately 2,000 miles of
County roadway.
The effort is intended to remove abrasives and other debris left behind
after a record-setting snow season, and to improve the appearance and safety
of County streets. The $350,000 cleanup program will begin in the
Gaithersburg/Germantown areas west of I-270 and continue in a counter-
clockwise route around the county.
Last year, the County recovered more than 2,500 tons of material through
the program. Removing salt and sand abrasives, and other debris, from road
surfaces helps in the long run to reduce infrastructure maintenance costs by
keeping drainage systems clean. It also helps to reduce pollutants which flow
into local tributaries and, eventually, into the Chesapeake Bay.
The street-sweeping operation will be conducted by Reilly's
Streetsweeping, Inc., under a contract with the County's Department of Public
Works and Transportation.
Daily updates of which areas are scheduled for street-sweeping will be
provided on County Cable 55, during the morning and afternoon rush hours, when
the channel provides live coverage of local traffic conditions.
