COUNTY RECOGNIZES LEADERS IN
RIDE-SHARING AND TRANSIT EFFORTS     FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 8, 1996


     County Executive Douglas M. Duncan today was joined by Federal Transit
Administrator Gordon Linton and Maryland Department of Transportation Deputy
Secretary Tom Osborne in recognizing local employers and individuals for their
leadership in promoting the use of mass transit, carpools, vanpools and other
alternatives to single-occupancy vehicles.  Their efforts help to reduce
traffic and pollution in the County.
     Twenty-nine commendations were presented as part of the 11th Annual
Transportation Awards Ceremony, sponsored by the County's Department of Public
Works and Transportation.
     Manor Care, Inc. and The Blairs received awards for "Newly Developed
Programs."  Manor Care developed a vanpool program in preparation for the
company's move to Gaithersburg.  The Blairs, a complex of 1,300 apartments,
initiated a transportation awareness program for its tenants, including a
"Welcome to the Blairs" gift tote with bus schedules, metrorail pocket guides
and ridesharing brochures.
     Recognized for on-going programs were Concepts Analysis-Department of
Defense for promoting commuter alternatives among a transient work force;
White Flint Commuter Service Center for offering transit fare media to
customers seven days a week; The Rock Spring Park Commuter Service Center for
its 10 years service to the Rock Spring Business Park, including special
incentive programs and matching services for carpools and vanpools; The JBG

Properties at Bethesda Crescent for its promotions of carpools and other 
commuting alternatives; Realty Management Company/Bethesda Metro Center, for
hosting commuter awareness days in the main lobby of the building and in the
food court; and COMSIS for selling transit fare media on-site at a discount,
and for offering flexible work hours, telecommuting options and promoting
commuting alternatives. 
     Special awards were presented to the Silver Spring Urban District for
funding the "Dasher" shopper shuttle in Silver Spring each December, and for
seeking and gaining private sector contributions and supporting the
Transportation Management District in promoting common interests to Silver
Spring commuters; Natalie Cantor, director of the Mid-County Regional Service
Center in Wheaton, for promoting alternative transportation not only to
employees and visitors to the center, but to nearby businesses; Theresa
O'Steen, Transit Marketing Specialist with the Commuter Services section of
the County's Department of Public Works and Transportation, for providing
ridesharing assistance and information to citizens and businesses; and the
Office of Project Development, Montgomery County, for its planning of numerous
alternative transportation projects during the last five years, including the
North Bethesda Transitway proposal to the U.S. Department of Transportation,
the U.S. 29 Transitway Study now in progress, and sidewalk and bicycle path
planning.
     "Driver of the Year" awards went to tax driver Eric Jones of Barwood
Transportation, Inc. and vanpool driver John "Jack" Brennan, who operates a
nine-passenger van from Frederick to Rockville.

TRANSPORTATION AWARDS                                                3-3-3-3
     "The Employee Transportation Coordinator of the Year" award went to Gail
Thorsen Faucett, a Traffic Management Specialist for the National Institutes
of Health, who has demonstrated a deep commitment to alternative means of
transportation.  Through her leadership, NIH now offers one of the largest
monthly employee transit discount programs in the County.
     The "Best of the Best" awards were started in 1988 by the American
Public Transit Association to pay tribute to the overall outstanding
performance by transit operators in their respective work areas.  At this
year's ceremony, the awards went to Silver Spring/Bethesda Ride-On bus driver
Nirmal Barua; Gaithersburg/Rockville Ride-On driver Walter O'Neil; Montgomery
County Paratransit driver Corwell Harley; Metrobus driver Jacqueline B. Smith;
and Metrorail train operator Leon Davis Brown.
     Recognized as "Best of the Best" transit coordinator was Gary Howes of
the Silver Spring/Bethesda Ride-On system.  He has trained bus operators for
14 years, and has coordinated the Alternative Community Service program for
the Montgomery County court system for the past 10 years -- organizing minor
offenders to clean buses, county cars and grounds as they work off the
community service portion of their sentences.    
     The Keep Montgomery County Moving (KMCM) Committee presented its awards
as follows:  Montgomery County Councilman Isiah Leggett received the Carmen E.
Turner Award for Achievement in Community Service; Jenny Myren of the County's
Commuter Services Section received the Robert S. McGarry Achievement in
Education Award; Linda Provost of the County's Commuter Services Section
received the Achievement in Public Information award; and David Bone of 
Transit Services received the Achievement in Advanced Transportation
Technology award.                 (more)

       The KMCM Committee presented special awards to recognize efforts
during the "Blizzard of '96."  Recognized were the Montgomery County
Department of Public Works and Transportation, Division of Highway Services;
the Montgomery County Public Schools, Department of Facilities Management;
Suburban Hospital, Safety and Security Operations; and the National Institutes
of Health, Division of Engineering Services.
