FOR MASTER RECYCLER/COMPOSTERS For Immediate Release: February 9, 1996

     The Montgomery County Master Recycler/Composter Program is looking for
civic-minded residents who want to enhance the environmental health of their
communities by becoming Master Recyclers and Master Composters.
     This national award-winning program has played a vital role in meeting
the educational needs of County residents through a speakers bureau;
workshops, clinics, and demonstrations; hotline; fairs, festivals and special
events; and activities designed for children and seniors.
     Training will be provided at a series of five, free workshops on March
2, 9, 16, 23, and April 14, which will be held at indoor and outdoor locations
across the County.
     Residents interested in becoming involved with the hundreds of
activities, tours, and volunteer opportunities available are invited to attend
the educational, entertaining workshops. Area environmental experts, like
"Compost King" Joe Keyser, will conduct sessions on home composting (including
building bins, monitoring progress, and testing new compost technologies),
grasscycling, and the increasingly popular worm composting. Other sessions
will cover household hazardous waste collection and

non-toxic alternatives; resource conservation through alternative landscape
design, like BayScapes for Backyards; commercial and multi-family recycling;
and additional training on public speaking, communications, and the County's
solid waste and recycling programs.
      Program manager Susanne Brunhart, a former volunteer, said, "There's no
better way to make an important difference in our environment than by
residents sharing information and experiences with one another."
     Brunhart said that in addition to in-depth coverage of issues and
topics, the program is meant to be fun. "We believe that working to improve
the environment should be rewarding. There are plenty of opportunities to
make new friends and enjoy working with neighbors."
