Services & Resources

In addition to our effort to provide competent and effective legal counsel to the County Government, we provide a variety of services and resources directly to the community.

You may view the Montgomery County Charter, Montgomery County Code, Zoning Ordinance and COMCOR at the American Legal Publishing website.

The 4-volume County Code, Zoning Ordinance, and COMCOR are available for purchase in print and/or on CD ROM (Folio Views and retrieval software), using the on-line Order Form or telephone (240) 777-6700. Gratis copies of the Charter are available from the Montgomery County Information Office (240)777-6530.

You may also view the table that indicates which chapters of the County Code apply to the various municipalities within Montgomery County.

County Attorney Opinions

The Montgomery County Charter designates the County Attorney as the chief legal officer of the County. The Office of the County Attorney conducts all the law business of the County, serves as legal advisor to the Council, and serves as the legal advisor to the County Executive, all departments, and other instrumentalities of the County Government. The County Attorney and the staff represent only the County and engage in no other law practice. Section 213 Montg. Co. Charter. In accordance with this provision, the County Attorney may issue opinions responding to inquiries from agencies and officers of the County, but cannot respond to requests for advice regarding private matters.

Appellate Briefs

We frequently file Appellate briefs in the state and federal appellate courts. Briefs filed in cases of general interest will be posted on this site -- all Court of Appeals briefs, amicus curiae briefs, and other significant issues. A short description of additional briefs that the office has filed also will appear here. To view a brief that does not have a link, just e-mail our Appeals Unit.

Newsletters

We proudly publish two newsletters for Montgomery County citizens and leaders. Both newsletters are now available in PDF file format, requiring Acrobat Reader to view. To install Acrobat Reader, click on the Acrobat logo.

Legal Views is a monthly newsletter prepared as part of the County Attorney's preventive law and education efforts. The information contained in the newsletter is not legal advice, but an informative tool for use by County agencies. While we attempt to ensure the accuracy of information, the informal nature of Legal Views does not allow for thorough legal analysis. If you have an interest in a reported article, please consult the county attorney assigned to your agency.

Code Words is published quarterly. We seek to keep the community informed about the Code Enforcement Unit's work and to provide information about important code enforcement issues. As stated in the inaugural issue, this newsletter reflects our willingness to put our efforts under a microscope and to allow our community leaders to help in our effort.

If you wish to be placed on the mailing list for either Legal Views or Code Words, please send your request with your full name, mailing address, and phone number to our Editor.

Resident Service Survey

Please complete our online Resident Service Survey. We seek to ensure that we provide the residents of Montgomery County with the most responsible and professional services and this will help us evaluate our service to you.
