23rd Annual Potomac River Watershed Clean-up, April 9th

From Karen at Calleva Outdoors:

Here is a BIG THANKS to EVERYONE who came out for EARTH DAY AT THE FARM 2011!!!

We had over 15 of our Calleva staff working with 20 volunteers from Potomac Community Resources  (PCR) and another 70 volunteers which included families, past campers, Boy Scouts, Cubs and Girl Scouts from all over Maryland  join us last Saturday, April 10th in Celebration of Earth Day!

In all we had over 100 Volunteers--which means over 400 volunteer hours spent on our farm!  PCR was WONDERFUL to donate $200 for farm tools and provide a lunch spread, with a little help from Whole Foods!

Thanks to everyone who helped with the construction of the Gray Water Pond; planting in our Pollinator Garden; creating a kitchen Herb and Tea Garden; learning about our bees; Mulching our trails; and planting Fruit trees and Potatoes .

We are so lucky to have such a support of VOLUNTEERS who stepped in, rolled up their sleeves and slopped in the mud, planted, trimmed, and shoveled!!!  Our planet is a little happier because of  your elbow grease!

D&R International Partnership with Parks Department Yields Silver Spring Demonstration Garden

D&R International, a Silver Spring-based environmental consulting firm, has partnered with the Montgomery County Department of Parks to develop the county’s first voluntary government-business garden. Located at the gateway to the Silver Spring business district, the Xeriscape Demonstration Garden at Woodside Urban Park includes more than 500 low-maintenance, drought-tolerant native plants and shrubs that attract wildlife. D&R worked closely with the Parks Development Division on garden layout, plant selection, and other project details. Bray & Scarff, a local kitchen and appliance retailer, also provided financial support for the project. Greenlink, a local landscaping company, donated the shrubs.  Click here to learn more!

Potomac Library Benefits from Local Landscaping Company's Community Service Project; Allentuck Landscaping Rebuilds Library Walkway

The Potomac Library has received a new walkway thanks to Allentuck Landscaping, a socially-conscious landscaping company based in Clarksburg, that has donated the labor and materials to upgrade the walk. Walkway repair and replacement took place on March “Friends of the Library is grateful to Allentuck Landscaping for their generosity and corporate goodwill to their neighbors,” said Ari Brooks, FOLMC executive director. “Through creative public-private initiatives such as this, we can provide an example for other businesses to lend support to the library community.”  Click here to read more!
