EMPLOYMENT SERVICES ARE COMING TO EAST COUNTY!
Beginning September 21st the Eastern Montgomery Regional Services Center will be providing job related assistance, a service of Montgomery Works Career Development Center.
An employment specialist will be available on the third Thursday of every month to provide East County residents with the right tools for getting back into the workforce, or building skills for advancement within a current job.
Assistance will be available in all areas of job readiness including resume writing, interviewing, career planning, networking and using computers to find job opportunities.

SURE ENERGY AND MONEY SAVERS FOR YOUR HOME

The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), in conjunction with the Eastern Montgomery Regional Services Center (EMRSC), is conducting a free workshop to help you save energy in your home or apartment. In many cases, simple low-cost measures can reduce energy consumption by 10% or more and comprehensive improvements can lead to 30% and greater savings. Sure Energy Savers can be found through your home’s lighting, heating, cooling, and exterior. Regardless of what happens with the cost of energy, energy-efficiency improvements will save you money!
This free workshop will be held on Wednesday, August 9th, 2006, from 7:00 pm to 8:15 pm, at the Eastern Montgomery Regional Services Center, 3300 Briggs Chaney Road, Silver Spring. DEP will be provide a free compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) to attendees (supplies limited). This low cost measure can save you up to $60 over the life of the lamp. Complimentary refreshments will be provided by the Center.

Montgomery Rx Discount Prescription Drug Cards Available Throughout County - Montgomery County residents who do not have prescription drug coverage are encouraged to use the Montgomery Rx prescription drug discount cards when filling prescriptions. The Montgomery Rx program, launched in December 2004, provides FREE prescription discount cards to County residents through a program sponsored by the National Association of Counties. The cards are easy to use and offer average savings of 20 percent off the retail price of commonly prescribed drugs. Since the program began, County residents have saved more than $2.6 million on the price of prescription drugs.

County Seeks Input on Obesity Prevention Strategies -The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services is seeking input from organizations and groups conducting nutrition and physical activity programs for County residents. The Obesity Prevention Strategy Group will review available local data, provide recommendations to the Department and advocate for policy changes that represent best practices for reducing obesity among children and adults. The online survey will be used to collect information about existing community resources that provide healthy eating and physical activity programs for Montgomery County residents.

County Offers Tips on Surviving the Heat - With record high temperatures expected this week, Montgomery County health officials are encouraging residents to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. BALLROOM DANCING AT STRATHMORE RESUMES SEPTEMBER 7th! -  BEST OF BALLROOM is back at the Music Center. Dance More International will continue its popular dance classes this fall on Monday and Thursday evenings. Monday classes for adults will introduce first-timers to dance and offer review to those with experience in ballroom. From proper hold positions to combinations of choreography across a large dance floor, this class will take you from an amateur to an accomplished dancer. (If there is demand, a second identical class will be offered on Thursday evenings.) BEST OF BALLROOM for young people and teenagers takes place on Thursday, with two different sessions for different age groups. Bill 34-06, Work Release/Pre Release Programs - Amendments, sponsored by the Council President at the request of the County Executive, was scheduled to be introduced on July 25, 2006. A public hearing is tentatively scheduled for September 19 at 1:30 p.m. During its meeting on July 17, the Public Safety Committee (Councilmember Subin was absent) reviewed and supported a tentative schedule that would result in Council action on this legislation in October.

SMALL BUSINESS ACTION FORUM
The Maryland Small Business Development Center (SBDC) hosted Delegate Herman Taylor's Small Business Action Forum at the Eastern Montgomery Regional Services Center from 9:00 am - 12:30 pm on Tuesday, July 25th. The event was attended by approximately 45 small business owners and provided information on resources and services to guide effective business practices.
Maryland State Delegate Herman Taylor provided opening remarks and spoke about his insights as a previous small business owner. Also in attendance were Renee C. Sprow, State Director of the Maryland SBDC, Jose Hernandez, Director of the Capital Region SBDC, Glenna Cush, SBDC Marketing Director and Dr. DeVance Walker, of Montgomery County’s Department of Economic Development. Topics addressed included small business financing, how to secure training funds, marketing tools, and county certification.

AMA TU VIDA HEALTH FESTIVAL ON SEPTEMBER 23, 2006
Work is underway for the Montgomery County Ama Tu Vida Health Festival which will take place at the Wheaton Regional Park on September 23, 2006. This outdoor celebration will offer county residents free health screenings, activities for children, youth and families plus opportunities to learn about available county and other community services. The event is one of Montgomery County’s celebrations recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month. Last year, the committee planned and held a very successful event that attracted over 1,000 county residents.
