The MontgomeryCounty Office of Human Rights - From November, 2006 the Montgomery County Office of Human Rights will initiate a community outreach program at all five Regional Service Centers.The community outreach program will place a Human Rights Investigator at each RegionalServicesCenter one day a week from 10:00am to 2:00pm. The Investigator will provide information, brochures, publications and intake services for anyone with human rights law enforcement concerns. The Office of Human Rights enforces Chapter 27, Article I of the Montgomery County Code which prohibits discrimination in employment, commercial and residential real estate transactions, public accommodations and intimidation on the bases of race, color, sex, religious creed, ancestry, marital status, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, family responsibilities, source of income and presence of children (housing only), genetic status (employment only) and age (housing and employment only). The Human Rights Investigator will be present every Monday beginning November 13, 2006 from 10:00am to 2:00pm at the EasternMontgomeryRegionalServicesCenter for walk-ins and by appointment. AARPDrivers Safety Class is the nation's first and largest refresher course for drivers age 50 and older that has helped millions of drivers remain safe on today's roads. The AARP Driver Safety class is an 8-hour course that can help you learn not only the effects of aging on driving but also how you can adjust your driving. WOMEN'S WINING WARDROBE COMING AGAIN TO THE EASTCOUNTY
Donations of Workplace attire are being sought for Winning Wardrobe Program - The Eastern Montgomery Regional Services Center is seeking donations of professional workplace attire until November 16th 2006 to host another Winning Wardrobe “Shopping Spree” to assist women who are preparing to re-enter the workforce.Each year thousands of women who have suffered from abuse, poverty, or have been the victims of domestic violence, are provided with the skills and tools necessary to begin new lives.The Winning Wardrobe supports their efforts by providing clean, professional clothing and accessories for their job interviews and new employment opportunities. The event will be held on November 17th at the Eastern Montgomery Regional Services Center from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. Grant Writing Workshop
More than 5,000 government and nonprofit agencies across America now turn to Grant Writing USA for grants training. Eastern Montgomery Regional Services Center, in partnership with Grant Writing USA, will present a two-day grant writing workshop on November 30th, 2006 and December 1st, 2006 between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. at the Eastern Montgomery Regional Services Center, 3300 Briggs Chaney Road, Silver Spring, MD 20904. All nonprofit and government professionals are welcome to attend.

Employment Counseling Services available at the Center:
Montgomery County Workforce Service continues to offer assistance to area residents with improving their interviewing skills, where to look for jobs, writing resumes, and applying for federal jobs. They enjoy being able to work with people individually and listen to their needs. They take the time to help them prepare for a successful job search.
Employment assistance is available at the Center every third Thursday of the month from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. Residents may schedule an appointment by calling 240-777-8400 or just drop by during these hours.
New ESOL Classes in partnership with AIRF being offered at EMRSC
Another ESOL class got off to a great start at the EasternMontgomeryRegionalServicesCenter on Thursday, October 12th.The free class, offered in partnership with the African Immigrant and Refuge Foundation (AIRF), is being attended by 17 beginning English speakers from countries including China, Vietnam, Haiti, Mexico, and many others.The highly interactive sessions will continue to meet on Tuesday and Thursday mornings (9:00am-12:00 pm) through January 2007.Free child care for children over 2 years is also being offered! The second Clergy Leadership Luncheon was held at the EasternMontgomeryRegionalServicesCenter on Tuesday, October 10th, with nearly 50 guests in attendance.The event started with a luncheon, catered byEggspectation restaurant in Silver Spring, and a series of presentations focused on “Building and permit Issues” by representatives from Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and the Montgomery County Department of Permitting Services. Guest speakers Pierra Weiss, Cathy Conlon, Robin Ferro, and David Niblock provided information on zoning, planning, and permitting as it related to faith congregations. The presentations concluded with an instructive question and answer period focused on areas of interest to the individual congregation members in attendance. This topic spurred stories of challenges and confusion by congregations attempting to navigate this complex process.Although admitting the process is lengthy and complicated, the audience was assured that there are people available and willing to assist those working their way through it, and that it can be done.
Solar Car Derby
Energy Awareness Month was celebrated at the EasternMontgomeryRegionalServicesCenter on Saturday, October 8th with a presentation on Solar Energy.Thirty-two parents and adolescents worked together to assemble model solar cars from kits provided by the Department of Environmental Protection.The cars were constructed to run off of an attached battery which is powered by the sun’s rays.Although rainy weather forced the cancellation of the Solar Car Derby itself, the youths were able to take their solar cars home with them to save for a sunny day.

We offer Personal Counseling for people who are experiencing a wide variety of issues and concerns. Our Career Counseling can help with career planning and work-related issues. County Sponsors Flu Vaccination Clinics for Residents- Flu Vaccination Clinics for Residents- County health officials will hold a flu vaccination clinic on Wednesday, November 8 from 9 a.m. to 12 noonat the DennisAvenueHealthCenter, located at 2000 Dennis Avenue in Silver Spring. Due to the late delivery of injectable flu vaccine, health officials will reserve shots for those high-risk individuals who meet the guidelines from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Those individuals who are not high-risk will receive FluMist, which uses a weakened form of the virus to protect against flu and is administered as a nasal spray, not by injection. Neighborhood Beautification Grants Available Keep Montgomery County Beautiful (KMCB)- is accepting grant applications for review this fall from an nonprofit community organization to fund beautification projects. The grants help communities fund projects by paying 50 percent of the total cost of a beautification project, up to $500. Ride On Seniors and People with Disabilities Ride Free Midday Program to include Metrobus - Beginning October 1, seniors and people with disabilities can ride Metrobus in Montgomery County and Ride On FREE, Monday through Friday, 9:30 am - 3:00 p.m. Seniors must be 65 years or older and have a valid Metro Senior ID card or Medicare card and photo ID. Montgomery Rx Discount Prescription Drug Cards Available throughout the CountyMontgomeryCounty residents who do not have prescription drug coverage- are encouraged to use the Montgomery Rx prescription drug discount cards when filling prescriptions. County Breaks Ground for Public Safety Memorial; Funded by Public/Private Donations; Memorial to Pay Tribute to Those Who Made Ultimate Sacrifice - A groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Montgomery County Public Safety Memorial was held today at the Public Safety Training Academy (PSTA) in Rockville. The orb-shaped memorial will be a tribute to the 28 men and women from the Countys public safety agencies that have lost their lives in the line of duty since 1928. The $300,000 memorial which will feature a granite fountain and five stone walls engraved with the names of the public safety officers who lost their lives will be built near the entrance to the training academy off Great Seneca Highway. The County Council today unanimously passed Bill 26-05 Stormwater Drainage and Runoff sponsored by Councilmember Nancy Floreen- Councilmember Floreen proposed the legislation to address the problems of water draining onto neighboring properties from new construction or large renovations. The bill, possibly the first in the nation, will take effect March 1, 2007, and requires builders to use, and certify the effectiveness of, various environmentally friendly methods to contain or convey water runoff, including rain gardens, green roofs, bioretention filters, or natural buffer areas.
