Consumer Tip of the Week
Is there a student in your house who is considering attending a "Private Career School" this fall instead of a traditional university or community college? Perhaps there is an adult you know who wants to change careers or sharpen their professional skills. A "Private Career School" is a business who provides training for a specific job. There are over 150 such schools in Maryland offering training is such fields as: computer training, medical technicians, real estate, auto mechanics, cooking, and even horse shoeing. However, consumers need to choose such a school carefully as they can often cost thousands of dollars. These schools need to be licensed through the Maryland Higher Education Commission at www.mhec.state.md.us/career/index.asp (MHEC). MHEC's website has information on how to choose a school, which ones are licensed and complaint records. Montgomery College also offers training in many of the "private career school" fields.
