Work Schedules

The 9-1-1 Center is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This means that Communications Specialists work days, nights, holidays, weekends, and during loved one’s birthdays or  anniversaries. Currently the Center has two work schedules for the employees.

The first work schedule is a 8 hour/5 day a week with fixed days off. Because of the 24 hour coverage that is needed in this position not every employee can have the weekends free or work daytime hours. There are three 8 hour shifts with fixed days off. They are:

Shift 1 11:45 pm – 8:00 am
Shift 2 7:45 am – 4:00 pm
Shift 3 3:45 pm – 12:00 midnight

The second work schedule is a 12 hour program. While 12 hour days may sound like a lot, in reality the employee works approximately 91 days less per year than the 8 hour employee. Days off rotate, allowing for the employee to have every other weekend free.  The 12 hour schedules are:

12:00 am - 12:00 pm              4:00 am - 4:00 pm         12:00 pm - 12:00 am             4:00 pm - 4:00 am

Work schedules are made via a shift bidding process that is conducted on a yearly basis.
