Montgomery County Police Department Working Together with
Mid-County United Ministries To Honor the Memory of
Captain Joseph Mattingly

January 27, 2004

The Montgomery County Police Community Policing Workgroup of the Bel Pre/Hewitt Avenue Neighborhood Initiative and the Office of the Montgomery County Victim Assistance Program have joined Mid-County United Ministries (MUM), which has named their food bank the “Mattingly Food Bank Program”. It is to honor Captain Joseph A. Mattingly, Jr., who was killed in the line of duty in a car crash on September 13, 2003.
Captain Mattingly, a 28-year-police veteran, was known for his community involvement. He was a facilitator of the Workgroup and a community volunteer whose heart went out to the underprivileged people in the county who were struggling to make a living. He had spoken about wanting to help the Workgroup develop a food bank. MUM maintains a food pantry at its headquarters office at 2424 Reedie Drive, on the 2nd floor of the Mid-County Services Building in Wheaton. MUM was formed in 1996 as a result of collaboration between a number of churches in the area and has been active in the Wheaton-Aspen Hill area by providing social services and emergency assistance to hundreds of clients every year.
The Mattingly Food Bank Program will also serve victims of crimes to include homicides and domestic abuse, through the Office of the Montgomery County Police Victim Assistance Program. Ms Blanca Kling and Ms Linda Ridall are the Victim Assistance Coordinators at the 4th District Police Station. This important addition to the Mid-County United Ministries, will work with the Victim Assistance Program to serve those families affected by criminal activity.
Many area churches will participate this Sunday in a special “Souper Bowl of Caring” canned food collection to help stock the food bank. Food donations will be accepted on an ongoing basis. Anyone wishing to make a contribution of non-perishable food and canned goods to the food bank, or to volunteer at the food back should make arrangements through Mr. Louis Lance at Wheaton Presbyterian Church, at 301-942-8900 during daytime business hours.
