Our Mission
On
March 12, 1996 the Montgomery County Police Computer Crime
Unit was established. The unit is currently staffed by three
investigators, and operates in coordination with the Montgomery
County Police Fraud Unit. The Computer Crime Unit investigators
are experts in the examination of micro computers in crime
related cases. They receive extensive training in the field
of computer forensics, and are often called upon to offer
assistance and training for other department operations.
Along with the legitimate uses of computers, the use of computers
in criminal activity is on the increase. As millions of computers,
nationwide, are used for both business and home use, this
sets the stage for an explosive increase in computer related
crime. Our goal is to offer the public a new, valuable and
higher level of police service. The investigators assigned
to the unit not only investigate computer related crimes,
but also assist the public and business community, in awareness
programs furthering the partnership between law enforcement
and the community. Computer Crime Unit interacts with community
and business associations, speaking on topics addressing issues
concerning e-mail and the Internet safety. They are also involved
with the Montgomery County Public Schools in a parent awareness
effort in order to make them aware of the warning signs of
possible Internet hazards. The Chief’s Youth Initiative
has composed a brochure addressing this issue, and is available
at public libraries.
The Computer Crime Unit has also established a partnership
with the Montgomery County States Attorney’s Office
in assigning a special prosecutor to solidify the prosecution
of computer crime related cases.
