Captain Mitch Cunningham has been a police officer since 1985 with the Montgomery County, Maryland Department of Police. He has been assigned to patrol, plainclothes street crimes units, undercover narcotics investigations and detailed to the United States Secret Service Metro Alien Task Force. Promoted to Sergeant in 1994, he began the Montgomery County Police Department's first auto theft unit and led the founding of WAVE, the Washington Area Vehicle Enforcement initiative. This multi-jurisdictional task force conducts auto theft tatical operations in Washington DC and Prince George's County. He also created the Department's Career Criminal unit, which ensures that violent and career criminals are prosecuted under mandatory minimum statutes. Additionally, he commanded the Department's Conflict Negotiation Team.
In February 2001, Captain Cunningham was promoted to Lieutenant and transferred to the 4th District, where he was a Deputy District Commander. In 2002, he was assigned to be Assistant to the Bureau Chief for the Management Services Bureau. He served on the DC Sniper Task Force commanding the local hostage negotiation unit. In March 2003, he was promoted to Captain and assigned as the District Commander for the 3rd District (Silver Spring). In addition to those duties, he was responsible for public safety for the Silver Spring Maryland Revitalization Project, one of the largest in the nation. During that time, he was the Project Manager for award winning RPDSS (Regional Pawn Data Systems) which is credited with recovering millions of dollars worth of stolen property and leading to hundreds of arrests.
In September of 2006, Captain Cunningham was assigned to be Director of the Information Support and Analysis Division and Special Advisor to the Bureau Chief on Technology Issues. He is also the Project Director for the award winning NCR-LINX system, a regional law enforcement data sharing system which connects agencies in the National Capitol Region. He teaches around the country, internationally and for the FBI on law enforcement related topics.
Captain Cunningham lives in Montgomery County, Maryland and is married with 3 children. |
