Make a Difference... Make a Commitment...
The Montgomery County Department of Police conducts an intern program to enhance the criminal justice and law enforcement programs of high schools, colleges and universities by offering opportunities for experiential and student service learning. The program is designed to meet both the academic and career objectives of students while providing useful administrative and operational support services to the police. The goals of the Law Enforcement Apprentice Program are:
- To better provide students the opportunity to become familiar with police operations and better understanding of the complexities of the criminal justice system through direct experience and training.
- To foster students' interest in law enforcement careers and to assist in preparing them for the police applicant process.
- To enable high school and college students to earn course credit and gain valuable career-related experience through meaningful and appropriate volunteer work.
- To encourage and support a culture of community service among young people which builds a foundation of commitment to volunteerism as adults.
An intern may be a student attending or recently graduated from high school of college (minimum age 18 or high school senior), usually majoring in criminal justice or a related field. The intern volunteers in order to gain career-related experience and/or earn course credit. Interns are unsalaried staff and actively participate in the functional operations of the department.
Interns agree to contribute a minimum of eight (8) volunteer hours per week and actively participate in a program of specialized training offered biweekly at the Police Training Academy. The purpose of these training sessions is to enhance their experience and exposure to a variety of aspects of law enforcement, build leadership skills, and encourage networking and peer support as they pursue their career goals.
Interns wear a department-issued, black polo shirt bearing the community policing insignia, along with their own khaki pants/skirt in order to assure a professional and standard appearance and maintain a high level of visibility within the volunteer corps.
