Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, which maintains the outdoor facilities, also provides tennis and basketball courts and a child's play area next to the Lawton Community Center.
In Detail The Lawton Community Center has a regulation size gymnasium (72' X 95') and is used for organized league play, competitions and instructional programs. The gym is also available at pre-determined times for self-directed "open gym." The weight/exercise room is equipped with a full circuit of self-administered weight machines, treadmills and exercise bikes. Affordable Gym memberships to meet all needs can be purchased.
The social hall accommodates up to 150 participants and provides space for a variety of social and dance activities. This hall can also be rented for private parties with fees determined by the type and size of the event. A large warming kitchen and a small court yard patio are available for use as well. For groups of 20 to 50 persons in need of meeting space or for small social events, Lawton offers a conference room and a community room.
If you feel creative, the center's art room is equipped with work tables, potters wheels and kilns. The use of these features is available during scheduled Montgomery County Recreation Department classes and programs. You'll also find opportunities for table tennis, billiards, air hockey and foosball among the activities available in the lobby/lounge area.
Club Friday is a high energy program for children in third through sixth grades. The club meets twice a month from October through March. Registration is limited to 300 members, and a waiting list is maintained for openings as they occur. Parents are encouraged to volunteer one Friday night during the Club Friday season to provide additional safety and security. The club does not meet during school holidays or when schools are closed due to inclement weather conditions.
