Kumud Mathur
The director of the Dance to Health Society, Ms. Kumud Mathur is from Bethesda, Maryland. She extensively trained in Kathak, a north Indian classical dance and is proficient in many folk dances from the Indian subcontinent. Mathur is trained in Kathak with Guru Shri Kundan Lalji from the Jaipur Gharana of Kathak, a very authentic style of the dance. Her folk dance training is traditional and she has earned a diploma in dance and Tabla (Indian drums) from the Music Academy of Rajasthan, India. Her performance experience is vast and even includes Indian Universities-sponsored youth festivals and competitions, in which she represented her home state. Other venues include the Smithsonian Institution, Asian Pacific American heritage events and inter-faith festivals in the Metro Washington DC region.
Mathur has been performing and teaching dance in the Metro Washington DC Area for over fifteen years. Not only is Mathur an artist and director of the Dance to Health Society, but she is a practicing mathematician with a Masters of Science in Mathematics from the University of Rajasthan.
As Bhangra dance sweeps across the country a a representative of Indian culture, one of its major hubs is in Potomac, Maryland at the Bhangra for fitness class! Students are experiencing a little bit of India culture, while keeping up their physical and spiritual health!
