Tompkins Karate Association (TKA)
Tompkins Karate Association (TKA) has taught Korean karate and jujitsu through the Montgomery County Recreation Department for 40 years and was the first karate program offered by MCRD starting in 1965. TKA was one of the first martial arts groups to welcome children under 13. While children are a large component of the program, many adults and enitre families enjoy the fun and benefits of these classes.
The founder and chief instructor of TKA is Dale Tompkins. Mr. Tompkins holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland and a Master’s Degree in physical education from the same institution. He taught physical education in the Montgomery County public schools for five years. He was an adjunct professor at Montgomery College from 1974 to 2003 and designed the martial arts program for accreditation at the College since 1974.
Mr. Tompkins’ goal with TKA is to teach a traditional martial art using current educational theory. TKA instructors are trained to use modern concepts in education to help students develop strength, flexibility, coordination, and physical fitness along with a sense of self-confidence, responsibility, and respect for themselves and others. TKA looks forward to a continuing tradition of martial arts excellence in Montgomery County.
