SUMMER 2009 Therapeutic Recreation Programs
Mission Statement The Therapeutic Recreation Team provides accessible leisure, educational and personal development activities for individuals with disabilities through mainstreaming and adaptive programs.
Mainstreaming Opportunities Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to register for programs. To facilitate your inclusion, you may request auxiliary aids and services.
Interpreters, large or braille print, other auxiliary aids or services, or companions must be requested at least 2 weeks prior to the start of the program. Please call 240-777-6870, TTY 240-777-6974, to schedule an intake for accommodations needed.
Companions provide one-to-one assistance to facilitate participation and assimilation into the program. Most companions are volunteers and placements are limited, and are not guaranteed.

20th Anniversary Children’s Day
VIP Program at the Fair: August 10, 2009 Co-sponsored by the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair and the City of Gaithersburg.
The Children’s Day at the Fair Committee is asking for help in identifying children who would benefit from this program. In order to be selected as a Children’s Day VIP, the child must be a resident of Montgomery County between the ages of five and fourteen years old and must have a severe disability or life-threatening illness.
The family must also be able to attend the Fair on Monday, August10 as honored guests. If you know of a child or children (who havenot previously been a VIP) and you feel would benefit from this very special program, please call 240-777-4925 for an application form .
Weekend Adult Social Clubs Adult clubs are designed to enhance community participation, skill development, and decision making, as well as just having fun with other members. Club members should be able to participate in the staff ratio of each club. Activities and membership starts in October.
Active Adults Club Adults, ages 21 and older, with developmental disabilities. 1 staff to 5 participants. Events require members to actively participate in community trips and group activities.
Weekenders Club Adults, ages 21 and older, with learning disabilities. 1 staff to 6 participants. This club serves independent members in group activities that are socially exciting in the community.
Socializers Club Adults, ages 21 and older, with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, vision and/or hearing impairments. 1 staff to 10 participants.
Exciting New Program for Summer 09
Adventures on the Chesapeake
We are partnering with Disabled Sports USA to provide two days of adventure on the Chesapeake Bay for active teens ages 12-15. This program is specifically designed to include both teens with and without disabilities
Day One: August 13, will be a day of fun learning to paddle outrigger canoes and kayaks near Chestertown, MD at the Kent Island Yacht Club. Instruction will be provided by the Kent Island Outrigger Canoe Club and Team River Runner.
Day Two: August 14, will include teambuilding activities and sailing out of Sandy Point State Park. Skippers and accessible boats will be provided by Chesapeake Regional Accessible Boating (CRAB).
All participants must be good swimmers. Staff Ratio 1: 7
You will need to bring a swim suit, towel and a bagged lunch. Instruction and specialized equipment provided. Transportation is provided by van from the TR program office to the program sites.
Cost: $90 includes both days 9am-5pm

Volunteers Needed for Summer Programs Earn student service learning hours. Support a child with a disability in a summer program or as an assistant in a Therapeutic Recreation camp. Training provided. Call the Volunteer Coordinator at 240-777-6870.
