  The Mediation Program:

Mediation is a voluntary process whereby parties in dispute meet with a trained and impartial mediator in order to facilitate a prompt and effective resolution. The mediator listens to each party's version of the dispute without making any determination of right or wrong. The mediator uses these positions as a starting point from which compromise and creative problem-solving strategies are employed toward achieving amicable resolution for all affected parties.

The State's Attorney's mediators are trained volunteer professionals in the community who hail from a variety of professional backgrounds including law, business, social work, engineering, and psychology. The mediators are skilled in current and innovative mediation and problem-solving techniques.

Why Use Mediation?
  • Prompt and effective resolution: Mediation is often scheduled rapidly and often results in advantageous agreements for all affected parties.
  • Convenient: Mediation is scheduled at the convenience of the parties whenever possible.
  • Confidential: Mediation takes place in a neutral setting and is confidential, with only the parties and mediator present. Attorneys may be in the building to advise their client, but the sessions remain informal with the parties speaking directly and privately.
  • No cost: The Mediation service is provided by the State's Attorney's Office as no cost.

Types of Disputes We Will Handle:

The mediation program addresses disputes which involve, or could escalate into, criminal conduct, such as:

  • neighborhood problems (arguments over pets, noise, parking, etc.); (domestic problems between family members, boyfriend/girlfriend, roommates, etc.)
  • landlord/tenant problems (damages, trespass, property, rent, etc.)
  • business relation problems (money, goods, damages or contract issues); and other.

Where Does Mediation Takes Place?

Mediations are held at the State's Attorney's Office on the fifth floor of the Montgomery County Judicial Center in Rockville, Maryland.
