The Juvenile Prosecution Team prosecutes delinquency cases, where juveniles are charged with violations of criminal law, in Montgomery County's Juvenile Court. The State's Attorney's Office files approximately 1,730 delinquency petitions a year in Juvenile Court. Prior to filing a petition, the juvenile Unit reviews police reports to determine whether or not an offense has been committed.
If the juvenile Unit determines, after balancing the interest of the child with those of the public at-large, that there are sufficient grounds to proceed, a petition may then be filed. Once the petition is filed, the State's Attorney's Office prosecutes the case by trial or plea. The Juvenile Court Prosecution Unit also represents the people of Montgomery County at the disposition phase of the case. The Juvenile Unit also administers the "Teen Court" program and has created a Truancy Abatement initiative in an effort to keep children in school and away from criminal activity. |
