The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is currently recruiting for Deputy Sheriff.  This recruitment will be used to fill positions beginning January 2018.

 

Prior to becoming a sworn deputy sheriff, deputy sheriff candidates are responsible for attending and successfully completing an extended curriculum of instruction that prepares an employee to work in any one of a variety of assignments in the Office of the Montgomery County Sheriff. 

 

The work of a Deputy Sheriff involves performing regulatory and law enforcement duties to protect the lives and property of Montgomery County residents. Deputy Sheriff's work varying shifts to include split shifts, evenings and midnights and may be called upon to work weekends and holidays. Deputies must also be available for periodic overnight trips and can travel by air, when necessary, to return inmates to and from other states. A Deputy Sheriff Candidate receives a comprehensive, six (6) months of training through a recruit training program.

 

The work environment of a Deputy Sheriff is divided between field work (serving civil process papers and warrants, transporting prisoners, returning prisoners from out of County/State and maintaining custody of prisoners in a small detention setting) and time spent in a courtroom providing prisoner and courtroom security. 

 

TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION, THE CANDIDATES MUST INDICATE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION ON THEIR APPLICATION/RESUMES AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION:

 

1.     MUST BE 20.5 YEARS OF AGE AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION 

2.     HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION DIPLOMA OR GED EQUIVALENT 

3.     POSSESSION OF A VAILD DRIVER'S LICENSE 

4.     MUST BE A UNITED STATES CITIZEN

 

The written examination is scheduled for the following dates:

September 16, 2017

October 21, 2017

 

Applicants will be notified of a test date, time and location via email prior to test date.  Walk-in applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are welcome to sit for the written examination.  Call 240-777-7108 for test times and details.

 

Prior to appointment, candidates must successfully complete an oral interview, background investigation, polygraph, physical, psychological, drug and alcohol screening.

Minimum Qualifications  

   

  Experience:  None

 

Education:   Completion of high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.

 

Equivalency: None.

 

LICENSE:  Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid driver's license.

 

OTHER:     

 

Be a United States citizen and 21 years of age as of the first day of employment as a sworn Deputy Sheriff.

  

Preferred Criteria  

   

  All applicants who meet minimum qualifications confirmed by OHR will be scheduled for a written examination. Based on the results of the written examination, applications will be rated "Well Qualified", "Qualified" or "Did Not Pass." The highest rated applicants will be placed on the Eligible List and may be considered for interview.

 

If selected for consideration for this position, you may be required to provide evidence that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities indicated on your resume.

 

All applicants will be reviewed by OHR to determine whether or not they meet minimum qualifications for the position.  All applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be reviewed and rated by subject matter experts based on the Preferred Criteria.  Based on the results of Preferred Criteria evaluation, applicants will be rated and placed on the Eligible List as either "Qualified" or "Well Qualified." The highest rated applicants will be placed on the Eligible List and may be considered for interview.  Employees meeting minimum qualifications who are the same grade will be placed on Eligible List as a "Lateral Transfer" candidate and may be considered for interview. Note: In the event there are 10 or fewer minimally qualified candidates, all will be placed on the Eligible List as Qualified and Hiring Managers will be required to interview a minimum of five candidates.  For "seniority" jobs (as shown in Article 8), resumes will be reviewed and rated by subject matter experts based on the Preferred Criteria.
