Storm Operations Response Overview

MCDOT is responsible for treating and plowing over 5,000 total lane miles in Montgomery County. When it snows, 200 employees with 175 pieces of equipment spring into action.  In addition, up to 180 contract personnel and over 200 pieces of contractor equipment can be mobilized as necessary. Winter storm operations plan stages are described below:

Stage Weather Conditions Response
Stage I Precipitation begins to fall County crews are monitoring road conditions and pre-treating roads.
Stage II Less than 3 inches of accumulation Crews are salting emergency and primary neighborhood roads.
Stage III Greater than 3 inches of accumulation Crews are plowing and salting emergency and primary neighborhood roads.
Emergency roads are cleared curb-to-curb and to bare pavement.
Stage IV Precipitation stopped Roads are still covered with snow. Crews are continuing to clear emergency and primary
neighborhood roads and have begun plowing neighborhood streets.
Stage V Precipitation stopped Crews have completed clearing County roads.
