Thursday, November 26, 2009: Thanksgiving Day - No County-provided recycling or trash collections on November 26; Thursday and Friday collections that week shift by one day. Transfer Station closes at 5 p.m. on November 25; closed November 26.

Effective September 21, 2009, our recycling program expanded to accept additional blue bin and mixed paper items!

Free Paint

Our free paint giveaway is closed for the winter. It will reopen on or around March 1, 2010. We will update this page when the reopening date is determined.

Our Household Hazardous Waste Program receives gallons and gallons of usable paint. The best way to dispose of paint is to use it up! That's why we are offering free paint on a trial basis.

  • Available daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    • We close the paint giveaway during the winter months, because freezing temperatures damage paint. Closures are noted on this page.
  • Take more than 3 gallons and receive a free 5 gallon bucket
  • For more information, contact Rick Dimont by email or 240-777-6564.

Paint is offered on a first-come, first-served basis, and colors are not guaranteed. Use this paint at your own risk; recipients must sign a waiver.

Solid Waste Transfer Station
16101 Frederick Rd
Derwood, MD 20855

  • Enter the Transfer Station from Route 355 (Frederick Rd.) and proceed straight back into the facility.
  • As you approach a small hill, stay to the right and follow the signs for RECYCLING.
  • After reaching the top of the hill, you will see a large compound with a high, blue chain link fence and covered with a large roof. That is our Hazardous Waste Compound. Tell the attendant that you are there for free paint!
