2010 Business Recycling Achievement Awards

Awards given by Solid Waste Services

Excellence in Recycling

Awarded to businesses and organizations that recycled at least 50 percent of their waste generated in 2009

  1. American Speech-Language-Hearing Association: With a recycling rate of 71 percent, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association continues to excel in their recycling and waste reduction efforts.

  2. BioReliance Corporation: BioReliance excels in their recycling efforts. In 2009, BioReliance recycled 52 percent of their waste stream.

  3. BNA: BNA continues to demonstrate their excellence in recycling and commitment towards the environment by recycling 94 percent of their waste in 2009.

  4. DRS Signal Solutions: By recycling 56 percent of their waste in 2009, DRS Signal Solutions in Gaithersburg remains an environmentally committed company.

  5. EU Services: With an environmental policy that includes increased recycling, waste reduction and pollution prevention, EU services successfully recycled 98 percent of their waste stream in 2009.

  6. Euro Motorcars: Euro Motorcars has placed a significant emphasis on recycling and as a result achieved a 56 percent recycling rate in 2009. In addition to the mandatory materials, they also recycle tires, motor oil and cleaning solvents.

  7. Fitzgerald Auto Malls: In 2009 Fitzgerald Auto Malls recycled 69 percent of their waste stream, demonstrating their outstanding recycling efforts.

  8. French International School: At the French International School in Bethesda students and staff continue to actively participate in their recycling efforts. The school successfully recycled 76 percent of their waste last year.

  9. General Conference Corporation of the Seventh-Day Adventists: Continuing to excel in their recycling efforts, the General Conference Corporation of the Seventh-Day Adventists, headquartered in Silver Spring recycled 69 percent of their waste in 2009.

  10. Howard Hughes Medical Institute: With a 57 percent recycling rate in 2009, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute continues to demonstrate its dedication to recycling.

  11. Hughes Network Systems, LLC: At Hughes Network Systems, recycling is made a part of their every day operations. In 2009 they recycled 61 percent of their waste.

  12. J. Craig Venter Institute: The J. Craig Venter Institute has made recycling a priority at their facilities in Montgomery County. Through their recycling efforts, they achieved a recycling rate of 82 percent in 2009.

  13. Lockheed Martin Corporate Headquarters:As a result of Lockheed Martin’s committed recycling and waste reduction strategies, the company recycled 82 percent of their waste in 2009 at their Bethesda headquarters.

  14. Lockheed Martin Information Systems & Global Services: Through persistent efforts and an active green team, Lockheed Martin Information Systems & Global Services recycled 55 percent of their waste in 2009.

  15. Marriott International Headquarters: Marriott International Headquarters is a leader in environmental stewardship. Their efforts include recycling of electronics, food waste and construction and demolition debris. By recycling 59 percent of their waste in 2009, Marriott has showcased its dedication to recycling.

  16. MOM’s Organic Market: MOM’s Organic Market is as environmentally friendly as you can get. With dedicated staff and successful recycling strategies, MOM’s Organic Market recycled 74 percent of their waste in 2009.

  17. Montgomery College: The management and staff at all three campuses at Montgomery College continually emphasize the importance of recycling. Overall, the college achieved a 63 percent recycling rate in 2009.

  18. Silver Spring Data Center:With a recycling program in place that continues to improve every year, the Silver Spring Data Center recycled 78 percent of their waste in 2009.

  19. The German School-Washington, D.C. in Potomac: The German School-Washington, D.C. in Potomac recycled 66 percent of their waste in 2009 through their successful recycling initiatives.

  20. The Humane Society of the United States: The Humane Society of the United States is always looking for ways to improve and maximize their recycling efforts.  In 2009 they recycled 79 percent of their waste.

  21. The Izaak Walton League of America: The Izaak Walton League of America continues to emphasize the importance of recycling to its’ members. They achieved a recycling rate of 56 percent in 2009.

  22. United Therapeutics Corporation: Recycling bins are located in every corner of every floor at United Therapeutics Corporation in Silver Spring. With successful strategies such as this one, they recycled a total of 69 percent of their waste stream in 2009.

  23. Westat: Through their continued recycling efforts, Westat in Rockville successfully recycled 60 percent of their waste in 2009.

Outstanding Achievement - Business

Awarded to businesses or individuals for their outstanding efforts in implementing or improving their recycling, waste reduction or buying recycled programs

  1. Asbury Methodist Village: Asbury Methodist Village encourages residents and staff to make recycling a part of their every day lives. Each year they hold a green fair where recycling is highlighted as one of the key elements of green living.

  2. Brookfield Properties- Silver Spring Metro Plaza & Metro Plaza I: Brookfield Properties continues to manage a successful recycling program at Metro Plaza and Metro Plaza One in Silver Spring.  Recycling information is provided to all new tenants and to guarantee the success of their recycling efforts, management regularly trains its janitorial service and maintenance staff on proper recycling procedures.

  3. Brookside Gardens: At Brookside Gardens, recycling and waste reduction activities are included in their every day operations. Some of these initiatives include encouraging the use of reusable dishware during events at the gardens to reduce waste.

  4. Cleaners Max: Cleaners Max in Rockville leads the way to demonstrate recycling for small businesses in Montgomery County. Despite the limited amount of waste they generate, management has implemented a recycling program and has trained all of its employees on the importance of recycling.

  5. Discovery Communications: Discovery Communication’s recycling initiatives range from mixed paper and cardboard recycling, to recycling electronic devices, batteries and toner cartridges. Through their recycling campaign and educational efforts, Discovery Communications has been able to garner employee support and increase their recycling efforts.

  6. Family and Nursing Care: The recycling program at Family Nursing Care is a perfect example of compliance with the County’s recycling regulations. They recycle all of the mandatory recyclable materials, have labeled recycling bins in appropriate sizes where materials are being generated and even conduct regular trainings for staff with their own set of do’s and don’ts. Keep up the good work!

  7. Henry M. Jackson Foundation - U.S. Military HIV Research Program: The Henry M. Jackson Foundation continues to excel in their recycling program. Their educational efforts include placing recycling posters by each fax and copy center as well as in kitchen areas to remind and encourage all employees to recycle.

  8. House of Printing: House of Printing in Burtonsville has a comprehensive recycling program in place. In addition to recycling all of the mandatory materials, they also recycle aluminum printing sheets and ink.

  9. JBG Commercial Management, LLC: At JBG Commercial Management, property managers have included recycling as part of their duties. They are responsive to requests to improve recycling efforts, attend seminars to learn about recycling requirements and always keep their tenants informed about recycling requirements and updates.

  10. La Bamba Restaurant: La Bamba Restaurant is diligent when it comes to recycling. They adjust their container capacity when needed and are prompt to report irregularities to the County to avoid overflowing containers and recyclables and trash on the ground.

  11. MedImmune: Along with MedImmune's expanding waste reduction program, MedImmune maintains a robust educational program covering all Gaithersburg locations. Recycling is thoroughly covered and heavily emphasized to all new employees during new hire orientation. MedImmune has also initiated the "Green Initiative" program aimed at improving their recycling and waste reduction efforts.

  12. Nordstrom at Montgomery Mall: The characteristics of an excellent store recycling program are evident at the Nordstrom at Montgomery Mall. Labeled bins for recyclable materials are located in key areas of the store, employees have been trained on the importance of recycling and the store recently implemented a food composting program to capture and recycle food waste from the cafe.

  13. One Church Street, LLC: At One Church Street in Rockville, tenants and property management have implemented a successful recycling program that encompasses awareness and convenience. The management team sends periodic reminders to tenants about recycling and listens to feedback from tenants on how to improve on-site recycling efforts.

  14. Rockledge Executive Plaza II: The recycling program at Rockledge Executive Plaza II located in Bethesda improved greatly as a result of the combined efforts between property management and tenants. Outreach and educational efforts have increased tenant recycling participation and overall awareness.

  15. Spectrum Printing and Graphics: Spectrum Printing and Graphics has a comprehensive recycling program in place to maximize recycling achievement.  Recycling containers are located in every office, and posters and signs are placed throughout the business to remind employees about the recycling program.

  16. Sport Chevrolet: Sport Chevrolet has significantly improved their recycling program by adding mixed paper recycling bins in all offices and establishing recycling stations in customer areas to encourage customers to participate in their recycling program.

  17. U.S. Department of Health & Human Services: The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, located in Rockville, consistently excels in its recycling efforts. To celebrate America Recycles Day, HHS employees convinced the cafeteria in their office building to sell insulated mugs and provide customers with a 10 cent discount when using the refillable mug. Approximately 200 mugs were sold in just 2 months and they continue to sell today.

  18. U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission: Through regular education and outreach, employees at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission are kept updated on their recycling program and are encouraged to actively participate in their recycling efforts. NRC has implemented an electronic system for recordkeeping and communications which has led to a reduction on their paper usage.

  19. Walmart Store # 2357: Walmart Store #2357 located in Germantown continues to improve its recycling efforts. In 2009, the store placed recycling bins underneath the cash registers to improve employee recycling.  Recycling containers were also placed next to trash containers inside the store to maximize both employee and customer recycling efforts.

Outstanding Achievement- Individual

Awarded to individuals for their outstanding efforts in implementing or improving their recycling, waste reduction or buying recycled programs.

  1. Diana Bradley - Vornado/Charles E. Smith: Ms. Diana Bradley is a recycling advocate. She educates her tenants, both new and long-standing about the County’s recycling requirements by emailing or sending recycling announcements on a quarterly basis. She offers tenants a free recycling training program at various times throughout the year and keeps abreast of current recycling issues by attending at least one SORRT seminar annually.

  2. Trang Do - Lockheed Martin Information Systems and Global Services: Ms. Trang Do is committed to Lockheed Martin’s recycling program. As the engine behind their recycling initiatives, she is always looking for ways to improve their recycling efforts and recycle more.

  3. Brian Lombel and Julio Sotomayor - Washington Real Estate Investment Trust: Mr. Lombel and Mr. Sotomayor assist new tenants at their building by providing them with recycling bins and pertinent recycling information. They encourage recycling and work with tenants to ensure successful recycling practices.

  4. Leigh Ann Moody - Jones Lang Lasalle: Ms. Leigh Ann Moody keeps her tenants informed about their recycling program and environmental initiatives. She has organized several recycling seminars as well as an electronic recycling collections event to promote participation. Congratulations Leigh Ann!

  5. Allison Nadler and Devin Yolles - Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School: As students at Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School, Ms. Allison Nadler and Mr. Devin Yolles have been instrumental in assisting their school to improve its’ recycling program and follow the county’s recycling guidelines.. Devin and Allison helped educate their peers by reminding them to recycle and created a recycling do’s and don’ts educational board.

  6. Lisa Oestereich: As the property manager for the Lee Building in Silver Spring, Ms. Lisa Oestereich has helped improve her property’s recycling program. She has worked with Montgomery County to educate her tenants about recycling and constantly monitors her program to improve their recycling efforts.
