General Information - Montgomery County Compost Facility

We began composting yard trim at the Montgomery County Compost Facility in 1983. The program originated with the composting of leaves collected by the Department of Public Works and Transportation's curbside leaf vacuuming program. Between 1989 and 1994, the program gradually expanded to include grass. Today, material is collected from all single family residences in the County. We also receive it from commercial and multi-family facilities.

The 118-acre site includes

  • a 49-acre asphalt pad
  • three stormwater management ponds
  • an 80,000 square foot pavilion for drying and screening of finished compost
  • an office/scalehouse
  • a maintenance building
  • a storage building
  • a pump house for the on-site well.

The Facility is owned by Montgomery County, and is operated by the Maryland Environmental Service (MES), with nine employees on site.

The site is located adjacent to the Montgomery County Resource Recovery Facility. The Compost Facility has an estimated annual processing capacity of 77,000 tons of material.
