Resource Recovery Facility: Emissions Data

Opacity | Carbon monoxide | Hydrogen chloride | Sulfur dioxide | Nitrogen oxides | Health effects

Health Effects

High concentrations of pollutants in the environment have the potential to cause adverse health effects to humans. However, the state-of-the-art air pollution control (APC) system at the Resource Recovery Facility removes more than 90% of acid gases (sulfur dioxide (SO2) and hydrogen chloride (HCl)) from the flue gas. Good combustion control produces minimum levels of carbon monoxide (CO) and dioxins. Ammonia injection removes up to 50% of nitrogen oxides (NOx). Therefore, the ground-level concentrations of all the gases discussed above are much lower than the levels that could cause potential health effects to people.
