Tub Grinding

a Tub Grinder converting raw yard trimmings into smaller pieces Compostable material, also called "Yard Trim", includes leaves and grass. After collection in the curbside recycling program, the yard trim initially goes to the Solid Waste Transfer Station, where it is ground to facilitate composting. In the Fall, leaves are also collected through the Highway Maintenance Section, Division of Operations, leaf vacuuming program.

The material is ground using a machine called a "tub grinder". Grinding the material into smaller pieces increases density, which reduces transportation costs. Smaller pieces also decompose faster.
