The Division of Traffic Engineering and Operations is committed to providing a safe and efficient traveling environment for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists who use our county's street system.

Pedestrian and caution signsWe install and maintain traffic signs and pavement markings; guardrail; oversee the installation and maintenance of streetlights; manage neighborhood traffic calming; roadway safety investigations and data collection programs; and oversee the occupancy of our public rights of way to ensure that work zone activities and special events occur with appropriate traffic controls.

The Division of Traffic Engineering and Operations installs, maintains and operates an advanced Transportation Management System (ATMS). ATMS provides real-time information about the transportation network including:

The Division of Traffic Engineering and Operations also has a Development Review Team that works closely with the Department of Permitting Services and the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission in reviewing the transportation elements of preliminary development plans as well as local area transportation review studies.
