MD 355 Project

This page contains an overview of the Maryland 355 (MD 355) project, as well as important reference documents. It also contains information related to its information public meetings commonly know as open houses. Other events of public outreach such as corridor advisory committee (CAC) meetings do not appear on this page.

About the Project

Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT), in partnership with Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT), is planning the implementation of bus rapid transit (BRT) on Maryland 355 (MD 355). This project is part of the Countywide Transit Corridors Functional Master Plan. It spans from Clarksburg to Bethesda. Most of its alignment goes along MD 355 (North Frederick Road, Rockville Pike, and Wisconsin Ave). MD 355 is an activity center corridor planned for high level of development.

In addition to this website, MDOT's website also provides useful information about this project.

This project is divided into two sections: north and south. The former falls north of Rockville Metro station. It is characterized by hearvy congestion and high transit ridership. It has several major existing and planned activity nodes, including Gaithersburg and Rockville.

The later falls south of Rockville Metro station. It is characterized by very heavy congestion and high transit ridership potential. Trips on this section are shorter and they represent a wide variety of travel purposes (shopping and recreation, in addition to commuting). This section has several planned or existing activity nodes, including Rockville, Twinbrook, White Flit, National Institutes of Health/Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and Bethesda's central business district.

Note: map at left presents the latest potential BRT stations under study as of April, 2016.
