First game on new Shirley Povich Field in Cabin John Park...
Councilmember and Southpaw Steve Silverman to Throw Out First Pitch of Bethesda-Chevy Chase Kids Baseball Season

It’ll be "Play Ball!" this Saturday when the kids of Bethesda-Chevy Chase Baseball Inc. kick off their season, playing the first game on the new Shirley Povich Field in Cabin John Regional Park.

Throwing out the first pitch will be Councilmember Steve Silverman, a rookie southpaw who’s had a good spring on the Council.

"I’m just happy to be here and, God willing, I can help the team," said Silverman. "Seriously, though, these kids are going to be the very first players on a brand-new field. It’s a thrill for me. It’ll be an even bigger thrill for them."

Councilmember Silverman is the lead Councilmember for Parks and Recreation and is a strong champion for increasing the number and quality of county ballfields. He’ll be joined by former Council President Bruce Adams, the driving force behind the construction of Shirley Povich Field as president of the Bethesda Community Base Ball Club.

The field, named after the late, great Washington Post sportswriter, is a public-private partnership and Montgomery County’s own "field of dreams." This summer, it will be the home field for college baseball stars coming together as the Bethesda Big Train, named for Montgomery County’s own Hall-of Famer Walter Johnson.
