Senior SmarTrip

Seniors (age 65 years) now have a new Senior SmarTrip card that may be used to ride Metrorail at senior fares, ride free on Ride On buses and some Metrobuses in Montgomery County Monday - Friday between 9:30 AM and 3 PM and Saturday between 8:30 AM and 4 PM or half fare at all other times.  The cost of the Senior SmarTrip card is $2.  There is no value on the card at the time of purchase. The new Senior SmarTrip Card may be presented to Ride On and Metro operators in Montgomery County to ride free during free periods or to get half fare all other times in Montgomery County on most routes. During free times, please do not tap the Senior SmarTrip card on the target on the farebox because a fare will be deducted from the card. Make sure there is value on the card during times of half fare.

Visit any library in Montgomery County, the Silver Spring TRiPS Store, the Mobile Commuter Store, or Montgomery County Treasury office and bring proof of age (state ID, birth certificate or passport). A registration form will be completed and you will be sold the new Senior SmarTrip card with information about the card. If you want to ride free from 9:30 AM to 3 PM Monday - Friday and 8:30 AM to 4 PM Saturday or for half fare all other times on Ride On or Metrobuses, you must present a Senior SmartTrip Card, or Medicare card along with a photo ID if you don't have the SmartTrip Card.

For more information, call the MC311 Information Center by dialing 311.

SmarTrip Is Here!

The SmarTrip card works on Ride On!  This convenient electronic card makes travel on transit in the region seamless and now saves you money.  With SmarTrip, travelers can pay for Metrorail, Metrobus, Ride On and parking at Metro stations, all with the convenient touch of a card. Customers can check balances and add money to the card on buses as well as at Metro stations.  SmarTrip is a permanent, rechargeable fare card. It's plastic like a credit card and embedded with a special computer chip that keeps track of the value of the card.

Improvements Made to SmarTrip for Ride On Riders

Two changes occurred to Ride On and Metrobus fareboxes that were intended to make the boarding process a bit faster for bus riders.

For passengers adding value to their SmarTrip card aboard the bus, the first change means it will only take  two taps  to complete the process versus three previously. On the first tap, passengers can add value. On the second tap, the farebox will add the value to the card and deduct the bus fare in one step. Safeguard features have been added so that riders are not overcharged if they accidently tap their card after adding value, or if they pay their fare first and then add value on board.

The second improvement is a new tone that will sound if a rider's SmarTrip card has less than $1.60 in stored value remaining. The  low balance warning tone  is intended to remind passengers to add value before they take their next trip to minimize boarding delays.

Riders are encouraged to add value to their SmarTrip cards at Metrorail stations, regional transit stores, select retail locations or the most convenient option: by signing up for Auto Reload at  wmata.com/autoreload .
