AODAAC, the Montgomery County Parent-Teacher Association, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving have collaborated to design a virtual prevention education program. It informs parents about the added risks to youth during the COVID-19 period. “Protect Your Family: Keep them Safe at Home,” is a brief and engaging presentation to raise parental awareness of the major threats to teens and tweens who may spend hours home alone. The information enables parents to initiate meaningful conversations to gain insight into their children’s feelings and understand the ways they may need additional support. Each of the potential risks can be explored further with the vetted and authoritative additional information sources provided. MADD offers additional resources for parents and youth, including their Power of Parents and Power of You(th) materials.
Interaction with groups such as the Maryland Public Interest Research Group have enabled us to assist with publicizing events aimed at ending the sale of flavored tobacco products statewide. In addition to publicizing events sponsored by PIRG, AODAAC submitted testimony to state legislative hearings supporting the goal of prohibiting the sale of these harmful products that are associated with increased use by youth and consequent tendency to promote addiction to the nicotine contained in these products. AODAAC joined an impressive list of partner groups who have endorsed a campaign called “Stop the Nicotine Trap,” an initiative run by the Maryland Public Interest Research Group (Maryland PIRG). This group is part of a nationwide, nonprofit, nonpartisan federation called US PIRG that has advocated for significant and challenging health, social and environmental concerns since 1970.
PAVe is a national grassroots organization founded in 2018 by three New York City moms — Dina Alessi, Meredith Berkman, and Dorian Fuhrman — as a response to the youth vaping epidemic. The catalyst for PAVe was their discovery in April, 2018 that a JUUL representative had entered their sons’ high-school through an outside anti-addiction group, without the school’s knowledge, and told the 9th-grade students, without adults present, that JUUL was “totally safe” and would receive FDA approval “any day.” (Their Congressional testimony about this incident was cited by FDA as evidence that JUUL had marketed directly to kids.)
The Mental Health Advisory Committee (MHAC) was established to advise the Montgomery County Executive and the County Council on matters concerning mental health. Our work includes providing citizen oversight to all state-funded mental health agencies serving Montgomery County and serving as an advocate for a comprehensive mental health system for persons of all ages. The Committee helps to ensure that publicly-funded mental health services are responsive to local needs, accountable to the citizenry and accessible to those in need. Our work includes closely following State and County legislative proposals relating to mental health.
The Citizens Review Board for Children (CRBC) supports all efforts to provide permanence for children in foster care. This state board provides oversight to Maryland's child protection agencies and trains volunteer citizen panels to aid in child protection efforts.
