Creating a Culture of Safety and Security (Andy Roszak)

In this engaging and informative session, we will explore the most common security and safety issues that are seen at early childhood programs, and explore how early childhood educators and leaders can work together to keep their facilities secure on an ongoing basis. We'll shed light on the biggest trends we are seeing in society that could affect site security and show how shifting the way we approach staff training, from a chore to an investment, can help us be mor prepared for the future. Participants will be provided with information on a variety of strategies to train and engage staff, so safety and security is top of mind for their entire team every day.

  1. Active Shooter Preparedness Training (Andy Roszak)
Active shooter preparedness training for early childhood professionals is a critical component to keeping child care programs safe and secure. participants learn evidence-based techniques and strategies on how to prepare for and respond to an active shooter incident. Participants learn how to conduct drills, develop a customized plan, and work together to ensure staff, teachers, and children are best prepared. The course also features a hands-on portion, where the tools and techniques discussed in the class are put to use.
 
2. De-Escalation Techniques for Early Childhood Professionals (Ron Roszak)
As you have no doubt experienced, tensions are running high. Now, more than ever, it is important to be proactive and 'lower the temperature' to prevent situations from escalating. In this course, we examine real world incidents and discuss proven techniques to help prevent unnecessarily escalating a situation.
 
3. Emergency Preparedness for Child Care Educators:  Essential Steps for Creating Prepared and Resilient Child Care Facilities (Sareem Streater & Zach Estess)
This presentation will review the four essential steps to emergency preparedness – staying informed, creating a plan, building a kit, and getting involved. The presenters will also discuss best practices for building a facility emergency action plan and training your staff to address potential threats/hazards, including fires, severe weather, and active assailants. Attendees should leave this training with actionable steps and resources to create a safer, disaster-resilient child care center for their students, families, and staff.

5. Protecting Vulnerable Populations: How We Serve Our Whole Community During Disaster (Patrick Campbell)
Our community is strong and diverse, and we must adapt and think hard about how we serve our vulnerable populations during periods of diversity. A perfect plan does not exist but going without one can be dangerous. This presentation will provide accurate and practical examples of how we can best serve our community, focusing on physical disabilities, autism, and other intellectual disabilities. It will have a formal presentation and interactive scenario and demonstrate how we can best prepare to serve our whole community.

Action Today for Better Recovery Tomorrow (Andy Roszak)
In an ever-changing world, emergencies and disasters are inevitable. While we cannot prevent these events, we can certainly prepare for them to ensure the safety and well-being of the children in our care. This session will equip early childhood professionals with the knowledge and strategies to enhance their preparedness and expedite the recovery process after a disaster. Drawing from over 20 years of experience in disaster recovery, emergency- preparedness expert Andy Roszak will share practical insights and actionable steps to help you center remain resilient and responsive in the face of unexpected challenges.

  • Trauma and mental health considerations Beginning the recovery process
  • What to expect from relief organizations Reunification

Situational awareness means being aware of your surroundings. The sooner you can identify things that are out of place, the more time you have to respond and react. This is especially important in a child care setting, as young children rely on providers to protect them and keep them safe. In our situational awareness online training, participants will learn and gain resources from a mix of slides, real-life videos, and graphics. Participants will learn how to create a culture of safety and awareness.
