Police Officer Requirements and Benefits

The following Minimum Qualifications must be met by all police officer applicants:

  • Education/Experience:
    • Possession of an Associate Degree or its equivalent – 60 college credits or 90 college quarter hours at time of application - OR -
    • Three (3) years of active duty military service. Applicant must provide official proof of separation from the military in good standing with an honorable discharge prior to being extended a conditional officer of employment - OR -
    • Three (3) years of full-time law enforcement officer experience recognized by MCPD; i.e., work as a sworn, government agent with full arrest powers eligible for rehire may be substituted for education requirement. Documentation will be required to be eligible for these substitutions.
  • Not less than 21 years of age at the time of graduation from the Academy.
  • United States citizenship.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation conducted by the Department of Police.

Successful candidates must pass a written examination, structured interview, polygraph examination, background investigation, psychological and medical evaluations.

In addition to an individualized assessment of suitability, selected candidates must demonstrate the following:

  • Corrected visual acuity 20/20 each eye.
  • Uncorrected  visual acuity 20/40 each eye for wearers of glasses or hard contact lenses. Soft contact lenses wearers are not subject to the uncorrected vision standard if successful long-term (six months) daily use of soft contact lens which corrects vision to 20/20 each eye
  • Color vision adequate to perform essential job tasks as measured on a Farnsworth D-15 test.
  • (1) Pure tone hearing thresholds in the unaided worst ear that exceeds 25 dB at 500Hz, 100Hz, and 2000Hz, and not worse than 35dB loss at 3000Hz is acceptable. OR (2) Pure tone thresholds in the unaided worst ear not greater than 30 dB at any one of the first three frequencies with an average loss of less than 30dB for all four frequencies (500Hz, 1000Hz, 2000Hz, 3000Hz) is acceptable
  • Exercise capacity of 12 METS (10 min) as measured on an exercise treadmill utilizing BRUCE protocol with a target heart rate of 90% maximum heart rate adjusted for age
  • Abdominal stretch 27 inches measured from chin to wall while bending backwards with hips strapped against wall
  • Standing Long Jump- 73” minimum
  • Bench press
  • Sit & Reach Stretch
  • Push-ups
  • Sit-ups
  • Other exercises or movements required by the Office of Medical Services to demonstrate fitness for duty

Salary and Benefits for Police Officer

We offer a starting salary of $50,462 for Police Officer Candidates.

Lateral Salary Range (based on prior police or military police experience):

  • $52,229 -  1 year
  • $54,057 – 2 years
  • $55,949 – 3 years
  • $57,908 – 4 years
  • $59,936 – 5 years
