Did you know that most homeowners' and renters' insurance does not cover flood damage? In order to cover flood damage to your property or belongings, you need to buy a separate flood insurance policy. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), from 2014 to 2024, almost one-third of National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) flood claims came from areas outside of FEMA-identified high-risk flood areas. The NFIP is a federal program managed by FEMA that provides flood insurance to property owners in participating communities. Because Montgomery County participates in the NFIP, any property in the County is eligible to get federally backed flood insurance through the program. If you are a tenant, renters flood insurance will help cover losses to your belongings in the event of a flood.
