GEORGE S. WILLIE, CPA, CGFM
Mr. Willie serves as a member of the public recommended by the County Executive. He is the managing partner of Bert Smith & Co. His areas of practice focus on the audits of governments, not-for-profits and healthcare organizations.
George serves on numerous boards and committees. They include; the U.S. Government Accountability Office’s Advisory Council on Government Auditing Standards, the Board of Visitors - Howard University School of Business, Advisory Council - Kogod School of Business (American University), American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Private Companies Practice Section Executive Committee, the Audit Committee of the American Institutes for Research, Business' Executive Council of Virginia State University, and the Advisory Board of the Business Administration Division of the University of the Virgin Islands.
George served on the faculties of Howard University and the University of the District of Columbia Schools of Business. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the AICPA, Board of Examiners – CPA Exam, AICPA Council, and a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of the District of Columbia (Chair of the Audit Committee).
Mr. Willie has received numerous awards, including being recognized for many years as one of the nation’s most influential practitioners by CPA Magazine and Accounting Today; the American University - Kogod School of Business Community Leadership Award; the Distinguished Alumni Award in the field of Business and Community Service from Howard University, the Special Vision 21 award by the Howard University School of Business, and the Outstanding Entrepreneur Award by the Institute of Caribbean Studies, among others.
George has testified before a number of regulatory and legislative bodies on many significant accounting and auditing issues. He is a frequent speaker at numerous forums on the challenges affecting the accounting profession.
Mr. Willie holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (Magna Cum Laude) in accounting from Howard University and a Masters of Business Administration in finance from American University.
